Len becomes fifth winner of the Four Shows Trophy

Len Atton, from Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, was presented with the Four Shows Ploughing Match Trophy at the Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show on Sunday 13 November. He is the fifth person to win the magnificent bronze since its inception in 2006.

The trophy was donated by John Brydon, a past President of the Newark & Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society. It depicts a horse-drawn plough and is competed for at Collingham, Flintham and Southwell Ploughing Matches and in a different class each year. The ‘fourth show’ from which the trophy takes its name is the agricultural link with the Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show, held in May every year.

Competing in the Ferguson Class with his TED 20 and Ferguson 2-furrow General Purpose Plough, Len took a commanding lead by winning at Collingham. A fourth place at Flintham and a third at Southwell gave him a total of 20 points and victory over John Kitching of Long Whatton, Loughborough, who competed at the last two shows to finish on 18 points.

For the first time in the trophy’s history there was a three-way tie for third place between Pete Chambers from Sutton in Ashfield, Andy French from Kibworth Beauchamp, Leicestershire, and Charlie Roberts from Syston, Leicestershire; all finished on 12 points.

ENDS

Len Atton is a retired agricultural worker who started competing in ploughing matches when he was 18 years old. He gave up competing in his mid-twenties but started again following his retirement, about 12 years ago.
